Spring Time Eating Dos and Donts

Spring is officially begun and our days are brighter longer and the temperature is starting to warm up. Spring is in the air and with each season comes seasonal foods.  There are many foods that spring offers which can help with keeping good digestion.  One wonderful vegetable which is plentiful in the spring is asparagus.  Asparagus is rich in probiotics which helps to promote a healthy gut by nourishing and feeding the healthy bacteria in our gut.  Spring time means the weather is warming up and you can start using the grill again.  Grilling cold water fish like salmon, halibut or haddock instead of red meats can be beneficial because these fishes are full of healthy omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-3 fatty acids can help to decrease inflammation in your digestive tract.  If you are not a fan of fish you can add flax seeds or walnuts to your smoothies or spring salads.

Spring time also means a lot more time outdoors and many people turn to sodas and sugary drinks to quench their thirst.  Soda and carbonated drinks introduce added air into the digestive tract and can cause severe problems in those who already suffer from digestion issues.  Soda also contains refined sugar and phosphoric acid which kill our healthy gut bacteria.   It’s also tempting to have a hot dog with our carbonated sodas but this is another food we should avoid, not only in the spring time but year round.  Hot dogs usually contain nitrates which can also kill off our beneficial bacteria in our digestive system, not to mention consuming process meats increase our risk of cancer.

Spring time gives us lots of yummy food options but be careful which ones you choose.  Even sugar snap peas can cause bloating or stomach pain because it contains high levels of FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and polyols).  Another way to keep your digestive system healthy is to get regular adjustments with your local San Diego Chiropractor.  When your nerves that function your digestion are compressed it causes many symptoms in the body included digestion issues.  Many San Deigo Chiropractors have seen a great reduction in digestion issues when their patients get adjusted on a regular basis.  If you have questions regarding your diet, digestion health or chiropractic care contact your local wellness center.
